Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic peptide of 28 amino acids whose sequence matches the amino-terminal region of prothymosin alpha. The chain is acetylated at its first residue and contains one disulfide bridge between two cysteine residues, which folds the molecule into a compact loop. Its molecular formula, C129H215N33O55, corresponds to a monoisotopic mass of roughly 3,106 daltons. Material used in laboratories is made by solid-phase synthesis rather than isolated from animal tissue.
Early work on thymic extracts in the 1960s described a heat-stable acidic fraction containing many polypeptides. Separation of that mixture yielded individual components, and thymosin alpha-1 was named as one of them on the basis of assays for T-cell activity. The first preparations came from calf thymus, while subsequent research and clinical material has been chemically synthesized. Nomenclature in older papers is inconsistent, and the same peptide sometimes appears under different designations, which complicates literature searches.
Recommended storage for the dry powder is a freezer near minus twenty degrees Celsius, kept desiccated and away from light. Once dissolved, the peptide is less stable and is usually held at two to eight degrees Celsius for short intervals or frozen for longer storage. Stability studies focus on the acetylated terminus and the disulfide linkage because those features define the intact molecule. Common degradation routes include cysteine oxidation, deamidation of asparagine or glutamine side chains, and slow formation of higher-molecular-weight species.
Identity and purity are usually checked by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the intact chain from truncated products, together with mass spectrometry for confirmation of the expected mass. Peptide mapping after enzymatic digestion and amino acid analysis add sequence-level evidence. Release testing also covers water content, residual solvents, and counter-ions, all of which influence measured mass and stability. Related-peptide limits are commonly expressed as a percentage of total peak area, with individual unspecified impurities held below a lower threshold.

Thymosin beta-4 is a separate 43-residue peptide that binds actin and participates in cell migration; it shares no sequence similarity with thymosin alpha-1 despite the common family name. Other preparative materials, such as thymosin fraction 5 and thymopoietin, contain distinct mixtures or peptides. The shared thymosin label reflects the tissue of origin used in early purification, not a common structural core. Treating these molecules as interchangeable is a frequent source of confusion in laboratory reports and in popular summaries alike.
Thymosin alpha-1 is a synthetic peptide of 28 amino acid residues that corresponds to a naturally occurring fragment first isolated from thymus tissue. Its chain is acetylated at the amino terminus, a modification that shields the peptide from rapid cleavage by aminopeptidases. The molecule carries a net negative charge at physiological pH and dissolves freely in water. Researchers classify it as an immune-modulating agent rather than a classical hormone, because it acts on several cell types of both the innate and the adaptive immune system.
The peptide was identified during work in the 1970s on thymosin fraction 5, a partially purified extract of calf thymus. Investigators separated that mixture and characterized individual components, one of which they named thymosin alpha-1. The same compound later received the international nonproprietary name thymalfasin. Commercial material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than by extraction, so synthetic and natural forms share an identical sequence. Naming conventions vary across the literature, and readers should distinguish the alpha-1 peptide from other thymosins that have unrelated sequences and functions.
Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is the standard technique for assessing purity and concentration, because the peptide's hydrophobicity allows clean separation from related impurities. Mass spectrometry confirms molecular identity and detects sequence errors or truncations. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping supply additional structural confirmation when required. Chromatographic purity values reported on certificates of analysis describe the proportion of the main peak and do not by themselves establish biological activity.
Like most short peptides, thymosin alpha-1 is susceptible to hydrolysis under strongly acidic or basic conditions and to oxidation when exposed to air over long periods. The acetylated amino terminus blocks one common degradation route, which contributes to the molecule's relative robustness in solution. Lyophilized material generally retains potency for extended periods when kept cold and dry. Once reconstituted, aqueous solutions are less stable and are typically used within a defined window rather than held indefinitely at ambient temperature.
=== 15 April === Four people were killed by Russian shelling in Siversk, Donetsk Oblast. Two people were killed in a separate attack in Lukiantsi, Kharkiv Oblast. Ukrainian media reported that the Ukrainian military launched a missile attack on a Russian command post in Crimea. The partisan group Atesh claimed that the headquarters of the 810th Marine Brigade in Sevastopol was struck. Ukrainian border guards intercepted a Russian sabotage group trying to enter Sumy Oblast.
Pompilidotoxins (PMTXs) are toxic substances that can only be found in the venom of several solitary wasps. This kind of wasp uses their venom to offensively capture prey and is relatively harmless to humans. This is in stark contrast to social insects that defend themselves and their colonies with their venom. The pompilidotoxin producing wasps are part of the Pompilinae subfamily which consists of fifty known genus groups of which only two groups are known to produce the toxin. Both groups produce different variants. The first notice of a pompilidotoxin variant was made by Konno et.al in 1997 after a survey was conducted of neurotoxins in solitary wasps that inhabit Japan. He purified and synthesised this toxin, now called α-pompilidotoxin from the solitary spider wasp (Anoplius samariensis). The second, closely related variant, β-pompilidotoxin, was found by Konno et.al. a year later in 1998 in another solitary wasp (Batozonellus maculifrons) In this year Konno et.al. also shed concrete light on the structure and function of these toxins. Anoplius samariensis is known to live distributed over the globe with reported cases in east-Asia, east and central Europe, and Russia. It produces the α-PMTX to act upon the nervous system of a stung victim. This way they can paralyse a wide range of spiders that will then be dragged to the wasp's nest that is located in the ground, in a cavity of a plant stem, or made from mud. The spider wasp lays its eggs on paralysed spiders so that the hatching larvae can feed on living prey.
MGM-16 is an opioid drug which is a synthetic derivative of mitragynine, a natural product derived from the Southeast Asian tree kratom. It is the 9-fluoro derivative of another semi-synthetic mitragynine derivative MGM-15, and is a comparatively potent opioid analgesic with approximately 240 times the potency of morphine. While several semi-synthetic derivatives of mitragynine such as 7-hydroxymitragynine and MGM-15 were widely sold in the United States as unscheduled designer drug alternatives to illicit opioids from around 2023–2026, it is unclear whether MGM-16 has appeared on the market to any significant extent. Nevertheless, on 2 July 2026, the DEA published a notice of intent to schedule three 7-hydroxymitragynine-related substances (mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16) under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. As of August 5th, 2026 MGM-16 has been placed in Schedule I through an emergency temporary scheduling order, making unauthorized possession, manufacture, and distribution illegal under federal law.
== History == The first pharmacokinetic model described in the scientific literature was in fact a PBPK model. It led, however, to computations intractable at that time. The focus shifted then to simpler models, for which analytical solutions could be obtained (such solutions were sums of exponential terms, which led to further simplifications.) The availability of computers and numerical integration algorithms marked a renewed interest in physiological models in the early 1970s. For substances with complex kinetics, or when inter-species extrapolations were required, simple models were insufficient and research continued on physiological models. By 2010, hundreds of scientific publications had described and used PBPK models, and at least two private companies have based their business on their expertise in this area.

== Chemical structure and properties == ECG is a flavonoid with a molecular formula of C22H18O10 and a molecular weight of 442.4 g/mol. Its structure comprises a flavan-3-ol backbone (epicatechin) esterified with gallic acid at the 3-position, featuring two catechol rings and a trihydroxybenzoate ring with multiple hydroxyl groups. In test tube experiments, the galloyl moiety enhances ECG's radical scavenging compared to epicatechin, with a DPPH assay showing higher antioxidant activity due to the additional hydroxyl groups. ECG is soluble in water, ethanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide, but degrades significantly in boiling water, limiting its stability in tea preparation.
Some proteins that are disordered or helical as monomers, such as amyloid β (see amyloid plaque) can form β-sheet-rich oligomeric structures associated with pathological states. The amyloid β protein's oligomeric form is implicated as a cause of Alzheimer's. Its structure has yet to be determined in full, but recent data suggest that it may resemble an unusual two-strand β-helix. The side chains from the amino acid residues found in a β-sheet structure may also be arranged such that many of the adjacent sidechains on one side of the sheet are hydrophobic, while many of those adjacent to each other on the alternate side of the sheet are polar or charged (hydrophilic), which can be useful if the sheet is to form a boundary between polar/watery and nonpolar/greasy environments. == Biological role and precautions == Neptunium does not have a biological role, as it has a short half-life and occurs only in small traces naturally. Animal tests show it to be absorbed poorly (~1%) via the digestive tract. When injected, it concentrates in the bones, from which it is slowly released. Finely divided neptunium metal presents a fire hazard because neptunium is pyrophoric; small grains will ignite spontaneously in air at room temperature.

== Adverse effects == Artesunate may cause serious side effects including hemolytic anemia (a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed), and severe allergic reactions. Artesunate is generally safe and well tolerated. Artesunate-based regimens are less likely to cause vomiting and tinnitus than quinine plus anti-malarial antibiotic therapy. The best recognised adverse effect of the artemisinins is that they lower reticulocyte counts. This is not usually of clinical relevance. With increased use of I.V. artesunate, there have been reports of post-artesunate delayed haemolysis (PADH). Delayed haemolysis (occurring around two weeks after treatment) has been observed in people treated with artesunate for severe malaria.

The organic reference materials include caffeine, glycine, n-hexadecane, icosanoic acid methyl ester (C20 FAME), L-valine, methylheptadecanoate, polyethylene foil, polyethylene power, vacuum oil, and NBS-22.
S: The number of susceptible individuals. When a susceptible and an infectious individual come into "infectious contact", the susceptible individual contracts the disease and transitions to the infectious compartment. I: The number of infectious individuals. These are individuals who have been infected and are capable of infecting susceptible individuals. R for the number of removed (and immune) or deceased individuals. These are individuals who have been infected and have either recovered from the disease and entered the removed compartment, or died. It is assumed that the number of deaths is negligible with respect to the total population. This compartment may also be called "recovered" or "resistant". This model is reasonably predictive for infectious diseases that are transmitted from human to human, and where recovery confers lasting resistance, such as measles, mumps, and rubella.

Its sequence corresponds to the amino-terminal portion of prothymosin alpha, a larger protein present in many cell types. The isolated 28-residue peptide is a fragment of that protein rather than a separately encoded molecule, and laboratory material is produced by synthesis.
The single bridge between two cysteine residues holds the chain in a folded loop that influences its shape and its behavior in solution. Loss of the bridge through reduction or oxidation shifts chromatographic retention and is tracked during stability work.
It is a defined 28-residue sequence derived from a larger precursor, whereas many other thymic preparations are mixtures of several polypeptides. Its acetylated amino terminus and single disulfide bridge distinguish it chemically from unrelated thymic extracts.
Reconstituted solutions are typically kept refrigerated at two to eight degrees Celsius when used within a short window, or frozen in aliquots for longer periods. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they can reduce recovery of intact peptide.
